Joan and Bill Martin started Brahmin back in 1982 and they chose the name for a very particular reason.  In the 1800's the term "Brahmin" was used in Boston to describe someone who had refined tastes and was from the upper end of society.  The Martins have used this name because they have sought to design and create handbags that suite the needs of the Brahmins of our day, while still providing reasonable prices for the quality you get.  After all, even those of us living on a tight budget still can have superb tastes and demand only the highest quality of handbags.

The Martin family is still very involved in both the design and concepts behind the Brahmin bags, even as they have become very popular.  In spite of it's popularity, it's still catching on with the rest of the world, however.  Currently there are only 4 retail locations and 2 outlet locations.  The four stores are in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New York, and there are two outlets, one in Florida and another in Fairhaven Massachusetts, where the whole company began.  But now that Brahmin has some roots in Florida, it is hoped that all the states in between will soon become aware of the quality and uniqueness of these timeless handbags.
